How to Play

1

Setup

Arrange chairs in a circle facing outward. You need one less chair than the number of players.

2

Start Music

Start playing upbeat music. Players walk around the circle of chairs.

3

Stop Music

When the music stops unexpectedly, everyone must find a chair to sit in.

4

Elimination

The player left standing is out. Remove one chair and continue until one winner remains.

Pro Tips & Tricks

  • Use cushions or paper plates on the floor instead of chairs for a safer indoor version!
  • Have a designated non-player manage the music to keep it fair.
  • For larger groups, start with 2-3 fewer chairs to speed up the early rounds.

Fun Variations to Try

Non-Elimination Version

Instead of removing players, remove chairs. When the music stops, everyone must try to fit onto the remaining chairs (sitting on laps is allowed!). See how few chairs your group can balance on.

Animal Walk Chairs

Instead of walking normally, call out an animal (like a penguin, frog, or elephant) that players must imitate while circling the chairs.

Extreme Musical Chairs

Place the chairs further apart or add small obstacles (like cushions to jump over) between chairs to increase the physical challenge for older kids or adults.

Common Questions (FAQ)

QWhat is the best music for Musical Chairs?

Fast-paced, upbeat songs without too many slow sections work best. Think "Happy" by Pharrell or classic party tunes. Make sure to pause at unpredictable moments!

QCan we play with toddlers?

Yes! For toddlers, use cushions on the floor instead of chairs to avoid falls. You might also want to play without elimination—just have them find a cushion when the music stops.

QWhat do we do if two people sit on the same chair?

The referee (music controller) makes the final call. Usually, the person who occupied the majority of the seat first stays, or you can have a quick "rock-paper-scissors" to decide.

QHow much space do I need?

You need enough room for the circle of chairs plus about 3 feet of walking space around them. A typical living room or backyard patio is usually sufficient.
